This resident of South Charleston before World War II, while serving as a sergeant with the 3rd Marine Division, was killed when he fell on a grenade at the Battle of the Koromokina River, Bougainville Islands in the Solomon Islands, on 7 November 1943, to save the lives of other soldiers.
He was born in 1918 in Columbus, Ohio, and was killed in action in 1943 in the Solomon Islands. He is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston.
WVU Medicine's Thomas Memorial Hospital is named for him, as was the USS Herbert J. Thomas, which was transferred to the Republic of China in 1974.
