This major with the 1st West Virginia Cavalry led a midnight attack on a retreating Confederate wagon train at Monterey Mountain, Pennsylvania, on 4 July 1863, at the end of the Battle of Gettysburg.
He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1833, and died in Washington, D.C., in 1911. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His brother also earned a Medal of Honor during the Civil War.
