This Pennsylvania native, while serving as a colonel with the 1st West Virginia Cavalry, saved the life of a drowning soldier under Confederate gunfire in the Greenbrier River (Greenbrier County), 22 May 1864. His brother also earned a Medal of Honor during the Civil War.
Before the war, he had started a medical practice in Bridgeport, Ohio. He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1825. After the war, he moved west and died in 1895 in Fargo, North Dakota. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
