This Charles Town (Jefferson County) native, while serving as a Marine sergeant, signaled the U.S.S. Dolphin on three occasions despite heavy gunfire during the Battle of Cuzco, Cuba, on 14 June 1898.
During his 26-year Marine career, he participated in The West Indies Campaign, Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, Cuban Campaign, Battle of Vera Cruz, and World War I. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Cross for his actions during the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I. He was born in 1870 and died in 1922 in St. Louis.
