This sergeant from Wheeling, while serving with the 1st West Virginia Infantry, led troops to safety and carried a wounded man from the battlefield under heavy fire at New Market, Virginia, on 15 May 1864.

After the war, this native of Ireland (born about 1837) worked in Wheeling as a machinist, engineer, and painter.
