This Carlisle (Fayette County) native, while serving as a sergeant with the 7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, singlehandedly overtook a German machine gun battery near La Lande, France, on 17 August 1944.

Bender also received the French Croix de Guerre, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star for his war-time service.

He was born in 1909 and died in 1994 in Thacker (Mingo County). A bridge on I-64/I--77 (West Virginia Turnpike) in Raleigh County is named in his honor.
