This Huntington native, while serving as a lieutenant colonel with the Marine Corps Reserve, 3rd Assault Battalion Landing Team, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, led the initial assault on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands from 19 to 22 February 1945.
