This Martinsburg native studied art in New York and Europe, becoming a skilled illustrator. Writing under the name "Porte Crayon," he also became well-known for his travel stories and drawings in Harper’s Monthly Magazine.

During the Civil War, he joined the Union Army, using his knowledge of Virginia's geography to help the North. After the war, he wrote about his experiences and supported West Virginia’s growth, encouraging progress while respecting nature.

Later, Strother served as a U.S. diplomat in Mexico. He died before finishing his last writing project.
