This Grafton native started coaching basketball at Rider College, then moved to Long Island University, where he led his team to national championships in 1939 and 1941. Bee quit coaching in 1951 after a cheating scandal involving his team. He felt he had failed as a coach.
In 1948, Clair Bee wrote Touchdown Pass, a book about high school football player Chip Hilton. It sold over 125,000 copies. Bee went on to write 23 more books in the series, following Chip and his friends through high school and college sports. The stories were set in places similar to Grafton.
Many critics think the best book in the series was Hoop Crazy, published in 1950. The last book, Comeback Cagers, came out in 1962. Through Chip, Bee taught kids to be honest, humble, and loyal, while showing the values of small-town America.
