This Tennessee native grew up in Mineral County, graduated from Keyser High School in 1932, and went to college in Georgia.
She married the Rev. Peter Marshall in 1936 and had a son in 1940. Soon after, she battled tuberculosis for three years. In 1949, her husband, then chaplain of the U.S. Senate, died suddenly. She shared his sermons in a book and wrote his biography, A Man Called Peter, which became a popular seller.
In 1959, she married editor Leonard LeSourd, and they worked together on books. Her most famous novel, Christy (1967), was based on her mother’s life and inspired a TV show and other works. She also wrote an inspiring autobiography called Meeting God at Every Turn in 1980.
