This Buckhannon native worked in many jobs before becoming a writer for children and teens. After graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1925, she taught English at a high school and then drama at a school in New York. She earned a master’s degree from Cornell University in 1930.

Latham worked in publishing, wrote plays and radio shows, and even trained inspectors during World War II, earning an award for her service.

She became best known for her children’s books. Carry On, Mr. Bowditch won the Newbery Medal in 1956. She also wrote about people such as Eli Whitney, Samuel Morse, and Rachel Carson. Latham wrote both fiction and nonfiction, as well as plays and adaptations of classic stories like Aladdin.
