This Bluefield native grew up in coal mining towns and is known for her novels about Appalachian life and history. She also worked as a community activist and ran for governor in 2000.
Giardina graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College and later became an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church. Her novels often focus on important historical times and people, such as Storming Heaven and The Unquiet Earth, which tell the stories of coal miners in central Appalachia. Giardina also spoke out against harmful mining practices and fought for workers' rights.
She has won many awards and taught at West Virginia State University. Her latest book, Emily’s Ghost (2009), is about the writer Emily Brontë. She is a winner of the prestigious American Book Award.
