This Pennsylvania native studied art and played jazz saxophone for extra money. After marrying Kay Harris, he moved to New York City and worked as an illustrator for magazines.
In 1939, Evans bought a farm in Preston County called Old Hemlock, where he raised hunting dogs. During World War II, he served in the Navy, drawing repair plans for damaged planes and ships.
Evans wrote 27 books and over 100 stories about bird hunting and life with his dogs. He believed hunting was about the experience, not just the kill. He and his wife also wrote five mystery books under the name Brandon Bird.
Evans often criticized hunting rules he thought hurt bird populations. He lived a quiet, private life and gained a loyal group of readers. After his death, Old Hemlock was added to the National Register of Historic Places and is now a nature preserve run by the Old Hemlock Foundation.
