Byrne was a well-known lawyer and writer from West Virginia who loved fishing. Born in Virginia, his family moved to West Virginia after the Civil War. He studied law with his uncle, a Supreme Court justice, and became a lawyer in 1884.
Byrne spent much of his free time fishing on the Elk River. He often told stories around the campfire, which he later published as Tale of the Elk, a West Virginia classic.
