This Buffalo (Putnam County) native studied at West Virginia University, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. Her master’s thesis listed 87 West Virginia writers. She later studied and taught at the University of Missouri and then earned her Ph.D. in Literature from Ohio State University in 1919.
Mary’s father, T. C. Atkeson, was the first dean of Agriculture at WVU, and she shared his love of farm life. Together, they wrote the book Pioneering in Agriculture. She also wrote The Woman on the Farm and The Shining Hours, and had four plays published in 1922. Her writing appeared in popular magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Ladies’ Home Journal.
