This Boone County native grew up in Danville, went to Scott District High School, and later studied at Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston). Harmon worked as a reporter and editor for several newspapers, including the Raleigh Register and the Beckley Post-Herald.
In 1937, he was named West Virginia’s poet laureate, a title he held for 38 years under four governors. He was given the honorary title of poet laureate emeritus in 1979.
Harmon wrote several poetry books, including Hillbilly Ballads (1938), Up the Creek (1948), and Roses in December (1978). He also served in the West Virginia House of Delegates and hosted a TV show in the 1950s.
