Davis & Elkins Historic District includes two historic Elkins homes: Halliehurst (shown here in 1905) and Graceland. Halliehurst was the home of Stephen B. Elkins, and Graceland belonged to Henry Gassaway Davis, who was also Elkins’ father-in-law.
Elkins built Halliehurst in 1890, naming it after his wife, Hallie Davis Elkins. The mansion was designed to look like a castle, with towers, porches, and large rooms for social events and gatherings.
Davis built Graceland in the 1890s as his summer home. The Victorian-style mansion is made of stone, wood, and detailed decorative designs. Today, both buildings are part of Davis & Elkins College, which uses them for various special events.
