The Greenbrier is a luxury hotel built on the site of natural mineral springs in Greenbrier County. Beginning in the late 1700s, White Sulphur Springs was a popular vacation spot for wealthy visitors and politicians. It grew even more after the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway arrived in the late 1860s. In 1910, the railroad company bought the property and built The Greenbrier resort in 1913.
During World War II, the resort was used by the U.S. government, first for holding diplomats and later as a large military hospital. In the Cold War era, a secret underground bunker was built beneath the resort to house Congress in case of nuclear war.
Today, The Greenbrier is known for its history, golf, casino, and tourism.
