When it opened in 1849, this was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It carried the National Road across the Ohio River and helped make Wheeling an important transportation and industrial center.

Designed by engineer Charles Ellet Jr., the bridge was built with locally made iron and wire. A major storm damaged it in 1854, but it was rebuilt and improved in 1860.

Because it was built before cars and trucks existed, it was not intended to handle heavy loads. Today, it is currently open only to pedestrians and bicyclists.
