Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville is the largest cone-shaped earthen mound in North America. Built by the Adena people more than 2,000 years ago, it stands 62 feet tall and contains about 57,000 tons of earth.

In the 1800s, early settlers found burial tombs inside the mound with beads, bracelets, and tools. A mysterious carved stone called the Grave Creek Tablet was also discovered, though most experts believe it is a fake. In the 1970s, archeologists determined that a moat once surrounded the mound.

The mound has long been a popular tourist attraction and once even had a saloon on top. Today, it is part of the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex.
