Bethany College was founded in 1840 by Alexander Campbell in Brooke County. It is the oldest four-year college in the state and is known for its strong liberal arts education.

The campus is also known for Old Main, an important example of Gothic Revival architecture from the 1800s. Bethany started construction of it in 1858, paused during the Civil War, and finished it afterward. More sections were added later.

Another National Historic Landmark is the Campbell Mansion, located near the campus.
