This Grafton native was one of America’s first famous female photographers. She studied art in Paris and New York, and then opened a portrait studio in Washington, D.C. in 1894, one of the first run by a woman. Johnston took pictures of factory workers, celebrities like Susan B. Anthony and Mark Twain, and five U.S. presidents. She also photographed important historic buildings in the South. Her photos are now in various museums and the Library of Congress.
