This Virginia native earned an art degree in 1968 and moved to Charleston, where he became an important part of West Virginia’s arts community. Hammer helped establish the West Virginia International Film Festival and the Professional Artist Cooperative Trust and worked at West Virginia State College (now University) and the state Division of Rehabilitation Services. Beginning in 1991, he worked with artist Chris Dutch as DutchHammer, creating award-winning mixed-media art. Hammer also created drawings, paintings, films, and digital photographs, often using flowers and other natural subjects for inspiration.
