Glen Smith (1923–2001) began his music career in 1942 and eventually settled in Elizabeth (Wirt County) around 1960. There, he formed the Mountain State Pickers with his son and other musicians. Their crowning achievement was to perform at the 1974 WVU homecoming game. Smith won numerous awards for his playing and was honored with the 1998 Vandalia Award.
