Tourism has become a major and growing part of West Virginia’s economy. Each year, visitors spend over $2 billion, supporting 60,000 jobs and bringing in over $1 billion in taxes. Every county has seen an increase in tourist spending.
People visit for outdoor fun like hiking, rafting, skiing, off-road ATV trails and exploring parks like the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and Monongahela National Forest. Many come from nearby states like Ohio and Virginia.
Cultural tourism is also rising. Visitors enjoy history, music, festivals, and crafts. Popular spots include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Cass Scenic Railroad, the Elk River Trail, and events like Mountain Stage, the Vandalia Gathering, and the Contemporary American Theater Festival.
