Ostrowski was born in Louisiana but grew up in Parkersburg. At Parkersburg Catholic High School, she led her team to 88 straight victories, two undefeated seasons, and back-to-back state championships in 1977 and 1978. She was the first female player to win the state’s top girls’ basketball award and received the honor three years in a row. Ostrowski helped the University of Tennessee reach the NCAA Final Four three times and earned All-American honors twice. She also won a gold medal with the U.S. women’s national team in 1983. She was inducted into several sports halls of fame. After her death from cancer at age 51, the state’s Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year Award was renamed in her honor in 2012.
