The school board delayed buying the new books to give time for more discussion. Alice Moore’s strong opinions started a major anti-textbook movement. By July and August, people were deeply divided. Most anti-textbook protesters lived in rural areas, while supporters were from Charleston and other cities. Many churches and pastors joined the protest. Two important protest leaders were Ezra Graley and Marvin Horan. Even though 12,000 people signed a petition and 27 ministers said the books were immoral or indecent, the board voted 3–2 in June to approve most of them. In this photo, Graley (left) and Horan (right) are seen marching with Rev. Carl McIntire (middle), a national conservative leader.
