Friars Hole Cave is the longest cave in West Virginia, with an incredible 44 miles of mapped passages. That makes it the seventh longest cave in the nation and the 31st longest in the world The cave is found on the western side of Droop Mountain in Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties. It formed mostly in limestone rocks that are more than 300 million years old (Mississippian Age). Water from Hills Creek actually flows underground through parts of the cave.
This is not a tourist cave. All eight entrances are on private land, and the area is managed by the Friars Hole Cave Preserve. The West Virginia Cave Conservancy advises that the cave is no longer stable and should not be entered due to safety concerns.
