Lost World Caverns, about two miles from Lewisburg, formed in limestone layers during the Mississippian Age. It has about 6,000 feet of passages, with a 600-foot section available for the public lighted tour.
The cave was first discovered in 1942. Initially, people had to use a rope or ladder and climb down a 115-foot vertical shaft to get inside. A walk-in entrance was built in 1968.
The highlight of the tour is a massive room—about 300 feet long and 50 feet high—filled with incredible calcite formations. The cave is known for its beautiful columns, stalagmites (rising from the floor), and stalactites (hanging from the ceiling), making it one of the state's most spectacular caves.
In 1971, the cave's manager, Bob Addis, set a Guinness World Record for "stalagmite sitting" by staying on top of a formation called the "war club" for over 15 days!
