This Louisiana native grew up in Parkersburg and became one of West Virginia’s greatest basketball players. At Parkersburg Catholic High School, she led her team to 88 straight wins, two undefeated seasons, and two state Class A championships in 1977 and 1978. She was the first woman to win the Russell A. Thom Award as West Virginia’s top girls’ basketball player and won it three times.

Ostrowski played at the University of Tennessee under Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt. The 6-foot-2 forward helped Tennessee reach four NCAA Final Fours and became a two-time All-American. She also won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 1983 World University Games.

Ostrowski was inducted into several sports halls of fame, including the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and died in 2013 at age 51. In 2012, West Virginia renamed its Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year Award in her honor.
