In the early 1900s, brothers Thomas and John Raine started the Meadow River Lumber Company in Greenbrier County. They built a sawmill, the town of Rainelle, and a railroad. The original mill burned in 1924 but was rebuilt and became the world's largest hardwood sawmill. At its peak, it cut 110,000 board feet per day. The company used portable lumber camps and horse teams to move logs until 1930, when it switched to cable skidders. The company made furniture, flooring, and even shoe heels. Rainelle was a model town with good living conditions. The mill was sold to Georgia-Pacific in 1970 and torn down in 1975.
