Harpers Ferry, originally called Peter's Hole, was settled by Robert Harper in the 1740s. He operated a ferry here, and the location was eventually renamed after him. Located where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, Harpers Ferry would be the site of a U.S. armory and arsenal, John Brown's Raid, Civil War battles, and major flooding.
