In the late 1700s and early 1800s, European-American settlers moved to an area called "the Ford" where they could cross the river. The first gristmill was built in 1812.
The county government was first organized at Salathiel Stalnaker’s home in DeKalb. People voted to make "The Ford"—now Glenville—the county seat. There was some disagreement, which led to secret moves and wild stories. Both towns were on an old Indian trail (now State Route 5), but The Ford had an advantage because a major road (now U.S. 33/119) crossed there. Glenville was officially laid out in 1845.
