The Forks-of-Cheat Baptist Church was founded near Morgantown in 1775. It is the oldest church in the state west of the Allegheny Mountains that still has continuous records. The congregation was formally organized on November 7, 1775, by Rev. John Corbly and 12 original members. Its oldest possession is a small hand-written parchment minute book. Other antiques include a silver communion pitcher and an hourglass, which was supposedly used to time preachers who talked for too long.

This small but active church has a few unique traditions. During its Homecoming Sundays each July, the church flies the British flag to remember that it was founded when the area was still an American colony under British rule. The church also features a famous "whiskey tombstone," a hollow grave marker that was secretly used during Prohibition to buy and sell alcohol near the church.
