The very first official celebration of Mother's Day took place in Grafton (Taylor County) on May 10, 1908 in this building: Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church. The day was chosen to honor the anniversary of the death of Anna Reeves Jarvis, who had worked at the church for 30 years and dreamed of having a day to celebrate mothers. Her daughter, also named Anna, made her mother's dream come true.

The Andrews Methodist Church building, made of two stories of red brick, was used for church services from 1873 until 1966, when the congregation merged with others. The International Mother's Day Shrine restored the building and opened it as a full shrine in the late 1960s. The church is now recognized as extremely important: it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1992. The shrine displays original church furniture and photos and papers from the Jarvis family.

The shrine still hosts a Mother's Day service every year.
