Peters Mountain is a ridge about 50 miles long, running along the border between Monroe County and Virginia. It was likely named after an early settler, Peter Wright.

This mountain is a geological twin to East River Mountain. They are separated only where the New River cuts a gap through them at The Narrows. The crest of Peters Mountain is made of the same hard, white sandstone that resists erosion, which is why the ridge is so high and continuous.

For most of its length, the mountain's crest is the state line. The highest point is near Zenith, reaching 4,050 feet.
