Kates Mountain (3,240 feet) is a ridge and landmark in Greenbrier County, located across from the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs.

The mountain is named for Kate Carpenter, who was one of the first European-American settlers in the area with her husband, Nicholas. In 1756, Nicholas was killed by Indians, but Kate managed to hide and escape with their infant daughter, Frances.

Kates Mountain is known for its unusual plants, especially two rare species:

• Kates Mountain Clover: First discovered in 1892, this clover has large white blossoms (twice the size of regular clover) and grows only on certain shale barrens (a type of dry, rocky soil).

• Box Huckleberry: This huckleberry is rare in the region and is unique because it's the only one here with evergreen leaves. It grows along the ground under rhododendrons and pines.

A portion of the mountain is included in Greenbrier State Forest, which you can drive through on the scenic Kates Mountain Road.
