New Deal programs also created special communities across the country to help families work their way out of poverty. The first was at Arthurdale (Preston County), a pet project of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Other cooperative communities were built at Red House (Eleanor) in Putnam County and Tygart Valley (Dailey) in Randolph County. Families who lived there were given homes, land to farm, and a chance to work together in a variety of industries and trades.
