Southern West Virginia’s modern iron making started in 1874 at Quinnimont in the New River Gorge. Investors built a coke-fueled furnace and hoped the area would become a major iron center like Pittsburgh. But the iron ore was too far away (Virginia), which made it too expensive to run. The furnace kept failing and finally shut down for good in 1884.
