Charles Tidd joined John Brown in 1856 after moving to Kansas. He helped free 11 enslaved people during a raid in Missouri and later became involved in Brown’s planned raid on Virginia. He participated in the early stages, helping to capture hostages, including Lewis Washington and John Allstadt. As the raid was falling apart, Tidd returned to the Kennedy Farm for weapons but then escaped with four other raiders and fled to Canada. He later joined the Union Army under the name Charles Plummer to avoid being linked to Brown. He died of illness in 1862 during a military campaign in North Carolina.
