The Buckhannon River is Upshur County's main waterway and the namesake of the city of Buckhannon. The river starts high in the mountains from three forks near Pickens (Randolph County) and flows nearly 47 miles north to join the Tygart Valley River.
The river provides drinking water for much of Upshur County and historically powered gristmills.
Today, the Buckhannon is loved for recreation. Though it starts as a cold trout stream in the south, it is considered one of West Virginia's best streams for catching the giant muskie farther north.
