Chambers was a Medal of Honor recipient from Huntington. He attended Marshall College (now University) and later earned a law degree while working for federal agencies.
Chambers joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1930 and became an officer in 1932. In World War II, he fought in the Pacific and earned the Medal of Honor for leading a brave assault during the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945. He was wounded and removed from combat a few days later.
Chambers retired as a colonel in 1946 and continued working in federal roles. He died in 1982 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. A bridge connecting Cabell and Wayne counties and a plaque at the Wayne County courthouse honor his memory.
