In the 21st century, West Virginia has had trouble finding enough teachers for certain subjects and areas. In 2015, a new law let schools hire people with a college degree and work experience, even if they hadn't gone through traditional teacher training. This replaced an older program called Transition to Teaching.
In February 2018, West Virginia teachers went on a nine-day strike over low pay and health benefits. It was the first statewide strike in 1990 and the first to include all 55 counties, shutting down schools. To end it, the governor and legislature gave teachers and state workers a 5% raise and paused changes to insurance and other work rules.
