The Wheeling Suspension Bridge opened in 1849 and was the longest in the world at the time. Designed by Charles Ellet Jr., it helped make America a leader in bridge building. All materials were made locally, and no government money was used.

The bridge connected major transportation routes and helped Wheeling grow. Though damaged by a storm in 1854, it was rebuilt in 1860 and still stands today.

Because it was built before cars, it has strict weight limits. A tour bus damaged it in 2019, and it was later closed to vehicles. Today, it's open to walkers and bikers while repairs are being planned.

It’s one of West Virginia's relatively few National Historic Landmarks and admired by engineers worldwide.
