In 1969, the West Virginia Division of Highways (DOH) replaced the former State Road Commission and became part of the state Department of Transportation. The department has over 6,000 employees, with about 4,800 working for the DOH.
The DOH manages the planning, building, and upkeep of about 39,000 miles of state roads, 555 miles of interstate highways, nearly 2,000 miles of national highways, 7,000 bridges, and many scenic byways. They also run programs like Adopt-a-Highway to keep roads clean and beautiful.
