On August 1, 1921, Tom Felts got his revenge.

On the courthouse steps in Welch, C. E. Lively and six detectives ambushed Sid and his boyhood friend, Ed Chambers. Lively killed Chambers with a bullet to the head. Five shots struck Hatfield, sending his lifeless body tumbling down the steps.

"They shot Sid down like a dog," said one miner.
