Claude Jeter founded the Swan Silvertones in the West Virginia coalfields in 1938 after singing with other miners. The group became one of the most important gospel groups in America, recording the classic song “Oh Mary Don’t You Weep” and influencing artists such as Paul Simon, Sam Cooke, Al Green, and John Fogerty.
