Bill Mazeroski was born in Wheeling and grew up in a small home near the Ohio River. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates at age 17.

Known for his amazing defense at second base, Mazeroski won eight Gold Glove Awards and still holds records for most double plays in a season and a career. He also had over 2,000 hits and played in 10 All-Star Games.

His most famous moment came against the New York Yankees in the 1960 World Series. He is still the only player in history to hit a walk-off home run to win game 7 of a series.

He played all of his 17 seasons with the Pirates and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
