On June 5, 1859, a severe frost destroyed many of the crops growing in Preston County. Farmers replanted their fields with hardy buckwheat, which grew well despite the harsh conditions. Buckwheat became an important crop for many years, and buckwheat pancakes have been a favorite local food ever since.
Today, thousands of people visit Kingwood each September for the Buckwheat Festival. The celebration includes parades, coronations, music, and other events. Visitors also enjoy large amounts of buckwheat pancakes (see photo) served with local sausage and maple syrup.
