Iroquoian-speakers first encountered European explorers in West Virginia

The French accepted the British/Iroquois claim to the Ohio Valley in the Treaty of Utrecht

The "Five Nations" became the Six Nations of the Iroquois when Tuscaroras were admitted

A treaty conference was held between representatives of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia and delegates from the Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora tribes; Virginia negotiators were able to buy their claim to the Ohio Valley in the Treaty of Lancaster
